Course Description

Introduction to the Social Sciences and Calypso – is a topical examination of social dimensions of the Caribbean cultures from the origins of human habitation to the present. The theme of the course is “Who am I? Who are we? Why Calypso?” It will seek to answer the questions “Who are we? What is the interrelationship between socio-cultural life, the self and Caribbean identity? What are the key institutions and patterns that impact on Caribbean Life? What is my role as and artist What is calypso? What are the basics in calypso composition? What makes a good calypso? How is calypso related to other Caribbean art forms? Its interdisciplinary approach will emphasize the perspectives of the various social sciences, note all the social interplay relevant to the calypso, with attention also given to the Humanities as the apply to the Caribbean. The works of Caribbean artists will be primarily stressed in the bid to understand key concepts and institutions. A variety of teaching and learning strategies -- lectures, workshops, class discussions, readings, research findings, interviews, guest lectures, music appreciation techniques, videos, recordings, photographs, drawings – will be utilized.

 Course Objectives

  1. Participants will develop an awareness of the approaches, tools and methodologies of the social science disciplines in the analysis and interpretation of multiculturalism, identity and other social phenomena in the Caribbean and elsewhere.
  2. Participants will develop greater abilities of critical think interpretation and clear, correct expression; such skills will lead them to create better calypso compositions.
